IPSC Rifle Divison Scope Recommendation

December 10, 2024 2 min read

Rifle Division (shoot from 50m to 350m): In IPSC rifle competitions, the shooting range spans from 50m to 350m, and speed plays a key role in scoring. A Low Power Variable Optic (LPVO) is the best choice for fast and accurate target acquisition.

Here are the key features to consider when selecting an LPVO:

True 1x Power:
A true 1x power scope allows for unmagnified viewing, so you can shoot with both eyes open. It also enhances rapid target acquisition and provides a wider field of view in in fast-paced scenarios.

Wide Field of View:
Low-magnification optics, like an LPVO, offer a wider field of view compared to higher-magnification scopes. A field of view exceeding 35 meters at 100 meters is ideal, allowing you to quickly spot and transition between targets.

Simple BDC Reticle with Illuminated Center Dot:
A simple BDC (Bullet Drop Compensating) reticle with an illuminated center dot is perfect for clarity and simplicity. It allows you to acquire targets quickly while still maintaining precision over varying distances. The illuminated dot ensures visibility, even in bright sunlight.

Large Eyebox for IPSC Competitions
A large eyebox is essential for IPSC shooters who need to quickly adapt to different shooting positions (prone, kneeling, standing) while maintaining accuracy. A larger eyebox offers faster alignment, especially during rapid movements. For a deeper dive into understanding the eyebox, check here.
Scopes with 4 inches (101mm) of eye relief is ideal for comfort and flexibility during IPSC competitions.

LPVO Magnification
For IPSC rifle competitions (50-350 meters), an LPVO with 1-6x magnification is typically the best choice. While 1-4x, 1-8x, and 1-10x are also effective, higher magnifications are rarely needed. Check out our blog about how to selecting a Continental LPVO.

Combining Optics for Different Distances
Many competitors use a combination of a rifle scope for mid-to-long-range shooting and a red dot sight for quick close-range targets. A 45-degree offset mount makes it easy to switch between the two.

For the Standard Rifle Division, where weight must not exceed 5 kg, lightweight red dots like the SCRD-43 (18.4g), SCRD-M43 (19g), and SCRD-62(24g) are ideal. For other divisions, red dots with larger windows like the SCRD-64/ SCRD-SM64 and SCRD-36/ SCRD-M36offer better visibility.
